A group that trains Newfoundland dogs to save people from rivers and lakes has received a £400 donation from The Co-operative Motor Group.
The extra cash will help the Middle England Newfs buy a new boat and engine to use at their weekend training sessions in the National Forest close to Albert Village, Burton-on-Trent.
The welcome donation was made after group member Darren Hatton, who is also sales manager at The Co-operative Motor Group Mazda in Derby, appealed for help to his general manager at The Co-operative Motor Group Tony Guest.
Darren explained: "Newfoundlands are wonderful dogs that were traditionally bred for swimming and life-saving. They have a double coat: an outer one that water just rolls off and a soft undercoat that traps the air to keep them buoyant and warm. They also have webbed feet and use all four legs to swim in a breast-stroke style, using their powerful tail as a rudder.
"Our group is one of around ten in Britain that trains Newfoundlands in life-saving and while we currently have around 24 human members – including children – and 12 canine members, we have only ever had one boat with a motor between us! I know The Co-operative Motor Group regularly gives to worthwhile local charities, so I thought I would just ask my boss if there was any help the motor group could give us.
"I was thrilled when the donation came through. Having two boats will be a big help to us in training the dogs. The group is really grateful to The Co-operative Motor Group for making it possible."
Tony Guest said: "As part of United Co-operatives, The Co-operative Motor Group is committed to doing its bit for the communities we serve and we are delighted to have been able to help such a good – and unusual – cause."
