Success for The Co-operative Motor Group Emissions Reduction Programme

Staff at The Co-operative Motor Group are celebrating the success of their Emission Control Service (ECS), which has saved 1,777.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) since its inception - the equivalent emissions made by an average car driving from Lands End to John O’Groats five thousand times.

The initiative, which was launched in January 2010, invited customers to undertake a complete emissions service in a bid to reduce exhaust emissions, improve fuel economy and restore lost power.  It is offered as an extra to a routine service and costs £19.99.

In return, for every ECS carried out, The Co-operative Motor Group offsets 20 per cent of a car’s annual CO2 emissions through funding projects in developing countries that avoid or absorb an equivalent amount of carbon dioxide*. The business has contributed £10,665 to help fund environmental projects across the world.

Carl Traviato, Group Aftersales Manager at The Co-operative Motor Group, said:  “As a responsible motor group we consistently look for ways to minimise the impact our businesses have on the environment, so this was a logical step for us.  More than 3,500 of motorists have used the service, and we are confident that its popularity will increase further in 2011.”

As part of the scheme, The Co-operative Motor Group also provided drivers with tips to bring down the cost of driving and reduce their environmental impact, such as driving at 50mph rather than 70mph, avoiding sharp acceleration and sudden braking, and eliminating unnecessary use of in-car controls such as air conditioning.
