Balloons for Zambia

While the majority of youngsters were beginning to tuck in to their Easter eggs last week, some pupils were busy making sure they were helping those a little less fortunate.

Saint John Houghton Catholic School in Ilkeston raised £10,000 last year to build a school room for street children in Zambia. And in a bid to provide continued support a second charity event was organised – in partnership with The Co-operative Motor Group – to rake in more funds.

Pupils, parents and Ilkeston residents alike were invited to take part in the school’s balloon race, in the hope of ultimately raising £4000 for school equipment – which year 10 students will deliver personally to the Zambian Kitwe project in June.

Speaking of the event, The Co-operative Motor Group dealer principal Jon Battison said: “We were more than happy to sponsor the race, as it is clear that the money raised really does go straight to the worthwhile cause. We are delighted that so many people gave their support and bought a balloon of their own.”

School Chaplain Rob Casey announced yesterday: “We are extremely proud of all the students’ hard work, and are really pleased that we were able to raise £600 on the day.

“Of the 600 launched, balloons were found in towns throughout the Midlands. But the wind was definitely in Jade Shepherd’s favour, whose balloon travelled 106.6 miles to The Wirral, winning her £150!”
