A mechanic at The Co-operative Motor Group’s Renault/Suzuki dealership in Mansfield has been voted Suzuki Apprentice of the Year.

16-year old Dane Johnson beat more than 100 other hopefuls from around the UK to take the accolade, and collected the award from British Superbike champion John Reynolds at a ceremony held at Eastwood Hall in Nottingham.

Dane, who started working on cars as a child with his father, who is also a mechanic, said: “All through school I knew what I wanted to do as a career. At 13 I took a work placement at a garage and worked there after I left school.
“I love the job I do. It’s mentally and physically stimulating, and I’m learning in a business environment where pressure is part of the job, but I love being here and getting hands on.”
Vincent Flynn, Dealer Principal at The Co-operative Motor Group, said: “We’re delighted for Dane, who is incredibly hard working and deserving of this award. Apprenticeship is very important to us – as it is to the entire Co-operative Group – and we will continue to invest in younger workers such as Dane to ensure that talented young people get the opportunities in the workplace that they deserve.”
